The Evolution of a Dinner Plan!
The joy of Spontaneity
What is dinner? In the 1300s, it was the “first big meal of the day” (between 9 AM and Noon), and the only thing that has changed is the time when it occurred. The word “Supper” was introduced in the mid-13c and means “last meal of the day.” But that is not the reason for my post today!
“Have you ever planned a healthy dinner and ended up with something unexpectedly delightful?”
Our plans can always take an exciting and sometimes delightful turn. Sometimes, what starts out with a wholesome intention is only to transform into a celebration of simplicity and joy.
What do I mean? Well, let me explain the reason for my post.
It all began with a text from my girlfriend, an epitome of health-consciousness. a proclamation, “I’m having fruit salad for dinner.” I could picture a perfect bowl of vibrant fruit – kiwi, strawberries, and maybe some apples—a collection of nature candy.
But the plan had evolved only briefly after the sun started to dip. “Actually, she proclaimed, I’ll just have grapes!” a correction from her original text. Still a healthy choice, Grapes are, after all, the fruits of the gods. Dionysus is the god of wine, grape harvesting, and winemaking, and grapes are great for increasing blood production and benefit our liver and kidneys.
Then, with the sun gone and the stars a glow, the final update arrived on my phone, tingling with a hint of mischief. “Well, it’s grape juice,” She confessed. It was a subtle shift, yet it still maintained a semblance of the original plan — It was fruit, after all.
I coaxed a bit, and finally, with a playful surrender, the final text message declared, “I am having wine for dinner!” with a smile I could picture stemming from ear to ear. But there it was, a delightful transition from a salad to a sip, encapsulating the fluidity of a relaxing evening.
This is more than a simple changing of the menu; it is a reflection of life’s simple pleasures. It’s about embracing spontaneity, finding joy in the little things, and the delightful realization that sometimes, the best-laid plans give way to something better.
This is a fictional interaction, and if you know us, the wine accompanies a large rib-eye steak and not a salad of any kind. The comment was made one evening, and I noted it down. As I read it today in my notes, it causes me to reflect on the person who made it so memorable. My girlfriend, with her spontaneous spirit and ability to find joy in the smallest things, constantly reminds me of what truly matters in life.
Her ability to adjust with a smile, her zest for life, and her capacity to embrace the unexpected brings laughter to our evenings and unparalleled warmth to every moment we share.
As we enter 2024, I look forward to more impromptu adventures with her. Her presence turns the ordinary into extraordinary, a journey I am grateful to be on.
To my girlfriend, thank you for being the wonderful person you are. Your spontaneity and joy are the essence of our evenings and the heartbeat of our life together. So, Here’s to embracing life’s twists with a smile, to the unplanned and the unforeseen, and to a future filled with love, laughter, and plenty of ‘wine for dinner‘ nights.
To our Friends & Family
Cheers to the simple joys and unplanned evenings that remind us to smile, relax, and enjoy the ride.! Remember, no one gets out alive, so enjoy the journey and not the destination — there are no trophies at the end.
Have an Amazing New Year, and don’t be a stranger in 2024.
